Independence
PayrollSignal is editorially independent. We accept no payment for placement in our reviews, comparisons, quiz results, or rankings. Providers cannot pay to be listed, pay to be ranked higher, pay to be recommended by the quiz, or pay to remove negative coverage.
Many of the providers we cover run affiliate programs, and we participate in some of them (see our Affiliate Disclosure). Whether a provider offers an affiliate program — and what it pays — has no influence on our reviews, scores, or quiz outcomes.
Who writes our content
All content is written or edited by Logan Allec, CPA, an active Certified Public Accountant who runs payroll for his own businesses and represents clients on payroll-tax issues before the IRS through Choice Tax Relief. Author bios appear on every review and comparison.
How we research
- We use providers' own published pricing and feature documentation as the primary source.
- We test the apps and onboarding flows wherever the provider allows.
- We cross-reference user reviews on G2, Capterra, the Better Business Bureau, and Reddit to surface recurring complaints — not anecdotes.
- We talk to small-business owners and bookkeepers who use these tools day-to-day.
How we score
Each provider review uses the same scorecard: payroll, tax compliance, ease of use, HR features, benefits, contractor handling, integrations, pricing transparency, support, and scalability. Scores are editorial judgments, not paid placements, and we explain the reasoning in line.
How the quiz works
The PayrollSignal quiz uses a transparent weighted-scoring model with explicit tie-breakers. The same business inputs always produce the same recommendation. Affiliate payouts are not part of the scoring.
Corrections
If something is wrong — a price changed, a feature shipped or got cut, a fact we missed — email corrections@payrollsignal.com. We update the page, note the change with a fresh "last updated" date, and (for material corrections) describe what we changed.
Update cadence
We review each provider page at least twice a year and re-verify pricing whenever a provider publicly changes it. Comparison articles are refreshed alongside the underlying reviews.
Not professional advice
PayrollSignal publishes general payroll software information. It is not legal, tax, HR, payroll, or accounting advice for your specific business. Consult a qualified professional before making decisions with tax or legal consequences.
