My take as a CPA

A CPA's take on Justworks

As a CPA and business owner, I care less about whether payroll software has the longest feature list and more about whether it helps a business owner avoid expensive payroll mistakes. The right payroll provider should make tax payments, filings, employee onboarding, contractor payments, and year-end forms feel routine — because payroll is one area where small mistakes can create real compliance problems.

Justworks stands out because

Published PEO pricing. Most PEOs hide their pricing — Justworks doesn't.

Where I'd be careful

PEO isn't for everyone. Make sure you understand the co-employment relationship and want HR infrastructure, not just payroll software.

Businesses I'd comfortably recommend Justworks to

Funded startups and small-to-midsize companies that want payroll, benefits, and HR support without building an HR team.

Businesses that should compare alternatives

If you don't need PEO/benefits, Gusto or OnPay is usually cheaper. For larger PEOs, look at TriNet, ADP TotalSource, or Paychex PEO.

Payroll pricing changes frequently. Always confirm current pricing on the provider’s site before signing up.

Justworks publishes its pricing — unusual in the PEO world — which is a meaningful advantage. Justworks Payroll (payroll software, not a PEO) is $50/month plus $8 per employee per month. The PEO products have no base fee: PEO Basic is $79 per employee per month and PEO Plus is $124 per employee per month. Pricing verified August 2026.

What to watch for in Justworks’s pricing
  • PEO model means you co-employ with Justworks — review the Client Service Agreement.
  • Benefits enrollment is annual — switching mid-year disrupts coverage.
  • Per-employee pricing scales fast above ~50 employees; renegotiate or compare.

Setup

Ease of use and setup

Setup difficulty
Moderate
  • Clean, modern UI — feels more like Gusto than a traditional PEO
  • Onboarding handled by Justworks team
  • Live chat with HR specialists is a real feature
Before you sign up, have this ready
  • EIN
  • State payroll tax account numbers
  • State unemployment account numbers
  • Employee information (I-9, W-4)
  • Contractor information (W-9)
  • Prior payroll history
  • Bank account for funding
  • Pay schedule
  • Benefits information (if any)
  • Workers' comp details (if any)
  • Accounting software login
  • PTO policy
  • Existing payroll provider info (if switching)
Integrations

Integrations

Accounting
  • QuickBooks Online
  • Xero
Time tracking
  • Justworks Hours
  • Deputy
Benefits
  • Large-group medical, dental, vision (PEO-sponsored)
  • 401(k), HSA, FSA, life, disability
HRIS
  • Common SSO providers
  • Justworks-native onboarding and docs

PayrollSignal take: Integrations matter because payroll is rarely isolated. If your payroll system doesn’t talk cleanly to your accounting software, time tracking, or benefits tools, you may end up spending more time fixing payroll than running it.

Payroll support matters more than ordinary software support because payroll problems often have deadlines attached. A login issue is annoying. A missed payroll tax deadline can be expensive.
